The very idea that Black Lives Matter has sparked outrage among certain groups of people in the United States and around the world.  For some reason when Black people say that their lives matter, it’s seen as some rallying cry against police and against white people when really, it is just a group of people saying brutality against Black people is wrong and they want police officers who kill unarmed Black people to be held accountable for their actions.  In response to the Black Lives Matter rallies that have taken place all around the world, a group of far right-wingers held their own White Lives Matter protest in Britain but it didn’t turn out the way they planned, according to Metro 87.1.

The protest happened in the town of Margate, which the protestors say is “over 95 per cent white and yet a third of the children live below the financial poverty line, 30 per cent of neighborhoods are in the poorest 10 per cent of those in the country.  According to the Independent, prior to protesting, the group which claims to have more than 2,000 members promoted their event on Facebook using a song that declared, “We’ll never be enslaved by a Zionist master plan” with white pride symbols in the background.  About 40 far right protestors showed up to the demonstration.  They were surrounded by police officers to keep them safe as they marched through the streets.

Counter protestors showed up to the demonstration and voiced their disgust about what they were witnessing.  The called the White Lives Matter protestor racists and shouted “Nazi scum, off our streets” and refugees are welcome here.”  They also took over the hashtag being used by the White Lives Matter protestors replacing the #WLM with “We Love Margate.”

Lisa Richards, a local business owner in favor of the counter protestors said, “I just feel we needed to so something positive rather than negative for a start.  We completely respect people for their right to protest as thankfully we live in a democracy.  But one of the things that upset me most out of this, is that we are happy and so grateful we live in such a great community and people were coming here and promoting hate and racism and that just appalled us so much we just had to make a stand.”

There is a White Lives Matter organization in the United States and it has been listed as a hate group.
