Yvette Carnell: Tavis Smiley Lists Excuses Black People Will Make if Obama Loses… But He Misses a Few

From the beginning, Tavis Smiley has gotten a lot of flack from the black community for holding President Obama’s feet to the fire. Smiley has said from the beginning that President Obama isn’t looking out for black people, and doesn’t have an agenda for poor people, who are disproportionately black and brown.
And in a new blog, Smiley is turning the corner, asking, ‘what if Obama loses?’ If that happens, black folk will make up all sorts of excuses which will, almost certainly, blame everyone except President Obama.
Here are Smiley’s top 10 excuses:
- They said Obama was winning!”
- “I didn’t get to the polls, but I did say a prayer for the brotha!”
- “You know they wasn’t gonna let no Black man have no two terms!”
- “See, what had happened was….”
- “I couldn’t get my outfit together!”
- “Racism.”
- “I must have caught that ‘Romnesia,’ is it 2018 already?”
- “They knew in the second term he was finally gonna hook US up!”
- “That damn Stacey Dash!”
- “They suppressed my vote!”
But Smiley neglected to mention the biggest excuse of them all: himself. I have no doubt that if Obama loses, black folk won’t blame President Obama, or his tepid approach at governance, but his most vocal black critics – Tavis Smiley, Cornel West, Boyce Watkins, and of course, yours truly.
It’s much easier to pretend that a few black writers and intellectuals have the power to sway the entire electorate than to admit what we’ve been saying all along was true: Obama spent too much time placating Tea Partiers and not nearly enough time catering to his own base.
Here are a few additional excuses black people will use if Obama loses.
- Obama didn’t want the job anymore. Who’d want to deal with all that racism day in and day out!
- White people used Obama to clean up their mess, then threw him away.
- Joe Biden!
- Obama miscalculated, threw the first debate with the rope-a-dope, but couldn’t come back quick enough.
- That Libya stuff was a set up!

The book associated with this fake god- the Bible instructs black ppl to “Love thy enemy” and “Slaves obey your Masters”. We have allowed ourselves to be more driven by emotionalism than serious political interests. I have heard every nonsensical excuse for this, including:
1. Obama can’t act too black.
2. Obama is not the President of the black community.
3. The Republicans won’t support his agenda.
4. General policies help blacks so what’s the problem?
5. Blacks have no agenda.
6. Blacks don’t give enough money.
7. Obama has delivered for the black community.
8. Stop asking government.
9. Blacks have not asked anything.
10. What have we required of Republicans?
11. We expect too much from Obama.
12. He’s only one person.
13. Wait until his 2nd term when he will unveil his agenda.
14. Addressing black issues is unconstitutional
15. Hey, its just great to have a black in The White House.
16. We can’t be too hard on him — his job is hard enough
17. He cares for us but his hands are tied.
18. Those who are critical are just haters.
19. Being critical is playing into the Republicans’ hands.
20. Obama has been attacked more than any President.
21. Obama is facing the worst set of conditions and can’t do much.
22. If we’re too hard on him, it will only appear that we don’t support.
23. Other problems are more critical.
This is the kind of BS that keeps blacks as political prostitutes. We give out our votes for little or nothing in return. Not a single one of the above arguments holds up under a serious analysis. But in the Obama years, blacks must just gather as damn sheep and abandon our common sense.

I agree with you 100% the black community didn’t use their vote as leverage it was always going to be there. At the black journalist lunch it was stated that the White House would not placate to the black community because they had no where else to go. “It is not our abilities that define us, it is our choice.” Tavis chooses to bash Obama, revealing how his focus is on his own ego. It is obvious Tavis does not choose to let go of Obama not participating in his futile State of Black America forums. Those forums were always about talk, no action. Now, he and West have the nerve to pick on Obama especially, unlike his not picking on all the white Presidents who did not nothing for black and poor folks either. Where is his sense of fairness, balance, and equity towards the candidates? I mean I do not hear him putting Romney’s feet to the fire about how much is he going to do for black folks.

Let me get this straight. Tavis revealed how Obama’s focus is on his own ego……..strange, previously Travis spoke of being insulted because this was the only President whohad not invited him to the White House………bruised ego, I would say.
What is it exactly that Obama isn’t doing for African Americans that he’s doing for other cultures in this country……and why would Romoney be a better choice. If Smiley or West see a problem, then surely they can suggest a solution or are they just using what they perceive to be a bad situation to make money. Tell you what, if today, Smiley or West were invited to the White House and given the same le-way that Reverend Sharpton has, there would be nothing to good for this President. But because President Obama was smart enough to see that these two were no more than judas, he stepped away so they could step off.

After reading this I must confess that several excuses may be used if President Obama doesn get voted back into office. Which would be a very sad day for African Americans in this country. However, I really feel the reason is most black people don’t see the severity of their need to vote in this election. As much as Obama’s Administration seems to catch the brunt of the arguement regarding wrongs thrusts on blacks (or poor people in general) agenda, our immediate interests have overshawed our long term goals. President Obama inherited more problems than any President in history, except Abraham Lincoln. He inherited hell and was expected to put out the fire in 4 years, which is not possible in any sense of a sane mind. But lets move on. What I find most difficult to believe are the ever constant complaints about the President where seemingly there were none regarding GWB. Yet, I wonder why for eight years, black people became poorer, further ignored by Washington, deprived of education, health care, tax relief and housing. They lived in conditions far inferior of whites and chose to remain silent against the very people who were responsible to make opportunities available to them as a way to improve their lives. Yes, this went on for eight years. Yet, for the life of me, I never heard a word of disagreement, disappointment or disrespect leveled at a President who never considered blacks recognizible as human beings, with needs wants and desires to achieve the so-called American Dream or at least the American Nap. However, when Barack Obama was elected, everything changed. Suddenly, government was questioned, examined and held accountable for all the ills of the Africa American Community. All bets were off and we wanted our share of everything and answers if we couldn’t have it immediately. He was going to be held accountable. He was going to conform to our will and not be allowed to walk away from our concerns, PERIOD.Trouble is where was all this indignation and rage during the Bush years. Where were the demands for talks, meetings, jobs, community improvements, education and opportunity. Did the Congressional Black Caucus visit the White House. Did Jesse want to snatch his (Bush’s) ball off. Did Tavis and Cornel write a book about his failings, do a bus tour, all under the guise of keeping blacks informed, or simply sieze the opportunity to sell their book. The rage is certainly apparent now, why not during the Bush years. Certainly it isn’t more important now that we have a black President in charge is it? Because the black President hasn’t been in charge nearly as long. To re-elect Barack Obama isn’t doing him a favor, he doesn’t need one, we do. We need someone to protect our interests, our needs and help us secure what we will need to put in place for our children. In four years Barack Obama will no longer be President, nor will he have a possibility of being President ever again. However, during what I hope will become his next term, all African Americans should sieze this opportunity and rally around the President who will ensure our freedom to live rationally as forward moving citizens in these United States of America. The next President will have the ability to appoint at least three new Supreme Court Justices.These justices must be liberals. Without liberal justices on the bench, African Americans will revert back to the mercurical era of Jim Crow. This simply cannot happen, we simply cannot allow it to happen. Truthfully, Barack Obama is not God, however, in his position he may be able to do some of what God would want done with regard to our freedoms. We can no longer afford to look the way of struggle in our lives. Forward is the only way we can afford to go. And, in this situation Barack Obama’s Presidency is the only way in which we can at the very least acquire a chance to keep our legacy safe. To admire Barack Obama is an individual choice. Many of his policies are foreign and unknown to our everyday lives. However, we still want to have a say in our choices and not become chattel to lives we have no clear choices about. We need a chance now and always. We need Barack Obama to continue our safety nets. Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare, Health Care, Extended Unemployment Benefits, Food Stamps, Jobs, Job training, tuition/tuition reimbursements, Pell Grants and affordable housing. With the emphasis on Roe v. Wade, the Republican Party has only begun to suggest the lengths they will use to take our most important right away from us forever………Civil Rights. The Republican Party have been determined to over turn the Civil Rights Act, since the day we lost Dr. King. That has been their focus. It has been their goal. A Republican majority Supreme Court would guarantee this goal and like him or not, Barack Obama is the only person who can avert their plan to do just that. My wish is that every African American would look much further out to see what this Presidential Election really means to us and put there full faith and support behind the only hope we have, to secure it for our lifetime and the lifetime of our children. No amount of crab barrel rhetoric will come to our aid if we allow the terms of our lives to be suggested as worse. No back biter will care if we lose, or have a suggestion to assist in our regaining our foothole back in America. African Americans need all the social perks other cultures seem to already be enjoying. The problem I find in this is that African Americans don’t seem willing to fight to have it that way for their community and that part we cannot blame on Barack Obama……….Please Vote.

I don’t know if you were in a coma or living under a rock during the Bush years, Both these guys were extremely critical of president Bush during his time in office. Check those SOBU conferences and see for yourself how critical they were. Dr. West even made an anti Bush CD. They were both even critical of Clinton. You are entitled to your own opinion but not to your own facts. How can I take you seriously when you either don’t know or are purposely distorting history to benefit your own agenda.
I understand a lot of us went from our main concern being how to do the stanky leg to becoming politically enlightened in a matter of days during the 2008 election. But just because you weren’t paying attention doesn’t mean that these men and a whole lot of others weren’t fighting.

I was fooled more than once during the 60’s but experience has made me better; I can spot a poverty pimp almost immediately.

We are Taxed, without “Proper Congressional Representation”. There are 4 Hispanic U.S. Senators and 0 African Americans U.S. Senators.

Also, The Only Recognized Representative of The District of Columbia, The Honorable Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton. Her Congressional Ability to Vote, was taken away.
If her Vote was returned……… that aleast would Increase The Representation in Congress.

And to answer a question you raised, I think some blacks are making noise with Obama’s presidency due to expectations not being met. Since Obama is black, some black folks had higher expectations for Obama, in regards to helping the black agenda. Is there a Black Agenda? I digress…
But I learned a long time ago…disappointment happens when people have expectations that may not be realistic, or may not be agreed to by the other party. So there are some disappointed black folks out there.
I also learned a long time ago that you don’t cut off your nose to spite your face.

I will vote for President because I’m not totally for Mitt agenda although personally I believe he is more capable of delivering what Blacks need the most which is JOBS 13.8% unemployed: I would take a job over health care any day because with a job I have the possibility of getting health care. Each President contribution to HCBU’s(which I’am a graduate) was started by Ronald Reagan. In 2008 I convinced people to vote for President Obama because it doesn’t matter what anyone state on this page when you for your local mayor, congress person, senator.. etc you expect them to at least acknowledge your issues, even if they can’t do anything about them. President Obama spoke about gay issues, spanish, wall street specifically: he may have but I never heard him once say anything that directly affected his own people. yes I’ll vote for him; but, I expect nothing from him. Travis might not have done anything but at least on PBS for 10 years he had a panel of some of our best minds to discuss our issues. Hate on Tavis if you want to, as Melissa stated, he was calling out GWB on the Fly Jock’s show, but do you all remember why Tavis stopped his political commentaries on the Tom Joyner Morning Show? Because he began questioning a particular candidate for president. You know, someone named Obama. Remember that? Unfortunately, I was one of those who also had issues with Tavis doing so.
During the Bush years, there was enough criticism to orbit this planet like the moon. The only reason you never heard it was because our corporate based media didn’t give you the lowdown.
In fact, they often whitewashed any forms of criticism or dissent during the Bush Era. Do you think that the Iraq War, for example, came about because of the silence of Americans? No way, there were many protests, some that numbered as high as 500,000, that were never covered.
That goes for the tanking of our economy, the draconian laws that former president Bush passed, and the irresponsible arrogant behavior of the Republican party, and those nutty Neocons who fueled most of it.
Advocate speaks to a deeper sense of Stockholm Syndrome that currently exists in our community. The list presented is all encompassing.

@Jal. I’m not sure exactly where Ms. Carnell stands, but T. Smiley has said that he voted for Obama in 2008 and will vote for him again in 2018. But the vote doesn’t mean he can’t be critical of his policies as any serious voter should. And fyi, there are at least two other candidates running for president this year. We don’t have to limit ourselves to the republicans (bloods) and the democrats (crips). Even though a 3rd party candidate may not win, they are there if you feel obligated to vote but can’t stomach either of the main choices. And please, stop with the straw man arguments excusing Obama. Nobody expects the president to put on a bow tie and sell bean pies in the trap. But we did expect him to respect us and hear our voice. He does neither. All of America does not include black folks.
BTW, I’m still very much part of Black America and I appreciate the work TS continues to do and I am not alone. I respect the president, but not every black person is an Obama freak.

Rejecting Obama doesn’t automatically mean you’re supporting Romney. That’s going from bad to worse. There are other candidates you know. The Green Party and a few others. Some are chosing not to vote at all.

This is the type of childish rant that gets us nowhere. Both Tavis and Dr. West have concluded that they were supporting Pres. Obama for this year’s election. Do you even listen to their show or do you just hop on the comment section to bash them every time you see their names in the headlines? Dr. West has always been an outspoken critic of politicians and an advocate for the poor and disenfranchised. Tavis started this quest to hold the presidential candidates accountable to the needs of the black community long before Obama announced he was running. Frankly, I applaud them both for trying to stand up for their beliefs in the mist of a sea of hateful Obama worshippers. I can’t fault them for doing what they said they were going to do. You call it ego, I call it courage and integrity. And who are these “white folks” that are supposed to be so delighted at Tavis and Cornel? What they are really delighted to see is a conversation about the poor and issues that affect the black community once again being squashed by… poor black folks! Only a real Obama freak would be irate at someone who speaks on their own self interest.

Donna my sister, you right on target. Many of our people are ignorant and seem be getting worse! Let me just say, I like Tavis and Dr. West, however; they need to confront every black mayor, senator and congress person. Also, all those leaders at the local level. We need to stop blaming President Obama and take personal responsibility. Tell our young brothers to stop dealing and girls stop having so many kids out of marriage. I for one, have working hard in my community with at risk children. I can’t even a father to help. Our communities were suffering long before President Obama!

Finally we have an invitation to the table, a place we have always belonged, but never invited or shared in the good things in life, self imposed or not. Remember Malcolm X, when he coined the phrase “By any means necessary” it wasn’t meant to depict the violence in us. It was meant to show the force of our belonging and committment to our community. Malcolm was the example, the epitomy of a man who displayed all the good a black man is and can become. Yet, his own found no use for him, and weren’t happy until they destroyed him. Preferring to live as crabs in a barrel and pass the opportunities by that they themselves could guarantee through hard work, respect and gratitude towards what they knew they should have. To this day, we exhibit the teachings of Dr. King. His teachings of non-violent resistance has echoed out into our choice for President, against many forms of obstructionist in his as well as our paths. We did it and so many other things that have become paramount to the better of us. Yet, there are those among us who would try and divide us. Let…make us feel that we can do better…..worse according to their words. The naysayers who use their psuedo positions for no other reason then expressed jealousy and ignorance towards something or someone who actually has something to offer us. Why are we so divided. No other culture in this world separates themselves from one another as we do. They stick together, thick or thin. You will never hear them disrespect each other in public, whether they admire each other or not. They think about each other and how they present themselves no matter where they are in the world. Listen up people, don’t allow some side line profiteer to discourage your thinking. Their interests in not your best. Their interest is theirs. If they can profit from you, while distracting you from the seeds of your dream or benefit, that is their purpose realized, not yours. Nothing standing on the side line defaming President Obama can protect you and yours for generations to come, while at the same time keeping the securities that are so important to you now in place. This Presidency is far beyond Barack Obama. This Presidency is for us. Barack Obama only has four more years period. But within that him he will have to appoint at least two Supreme Court Justices. Those Justices will set the laws that will guide this country for decades. The same decades our children will grow up and live in. Our grandparents knew it when they saw it in Thurgood Marshall. He fought hard for us, and won. They wanted something to pass on to us in a meaningful way and they did. We need, our turn, our security, our place at the table. And yet, there are those among who profess, President Obama hasn’t nor could he ever do enough, at least by their time table. Question…..what have the naysayers done to look out for your future, as their obviously looking out for theirs.
