To Russia, with love.
Donald Trump said he’d like to meet with Russian strongman Vladimir Putin even before his theoretical inauguration as president, while heaping even more praise on the autocratic leader.
“I think I could see myself meeting with Putin and meeting with Russia prior to the start of the administration. I think it would be wonderful,” Trump said during a Monday interview with conservative radio host Michael Savage.
Trump once again made it clear that he’s not the normal Republican – or normal American politician – arguing that he’d like to see a much closer, less confrontational relationship with Putin.
That’s no shock: Russia seems to be actively helping his campaign, with Russian-backed hackers releasing troves of stolen sensitive personal communications between Clinton staffers.
“They say, ‘Oh well Russia loves Donald Trump and Putin loves Donald Trump,'” Trump told Savage. “They insult him constantly, no wonder he can’t stand Obama and Hillary Clinton.”
The U.S. and Russia have been at odds over Ukraine, and are struggling to work together to end the bloodbath in Syria, with Russia making clear its only interest is propping up the bloody Assad regime while the U.S. is more interested in destroying ISIS and ending civilian atrocities.
