Bob Costas from NBC used his time during the halftime segment of Sunday Night Football to talk about the recent murder-suicide of Chiefs player Jovan Belcher and his child’s mother, Kassandra Perkins. During the segment, Costas spoke about gun control and whether or not this played a role in the death of the player.
Costas did a 90-second segment on the topic, paraphrasing an article written by sports writer Jason Whitlock, who lives in Kansas City.
Costas said: “In the coming days, Jovan Belcher’s actions and their possible connection to football will be analyzed. Who knows? But here, wrote Jason Whitlock, is what I believe. If Jovan Belcher didn’t possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today.”
Belcher died after shooting himself on Saturday morning. Before committing suicide, the player shot and killed Perkins in their home. His three month old daughter has been sent to live with Belcher’s mother in Long Island as a result of the tragedy. Those in social media were not all happy with Costas, whom they felt was politicizing his personal feelings during a segment that was meant to be entertaining. But Costas is a veteran broadcaster with plenty of money, fame and financial security. It seems that he can say what he wants and no one can do anything about it.
