Linebacker Brandon Spikes is learning the hard way that you can’t make jokes about homosexuality. The player put up a tweet that was meant to be a joke, but led to a backlash that he probably didn’t expect. Here were the words that got him into trouble:
“I’m homophobic just like I’m arachnopobic. I have nothing against homosexuals or spiders but I’d still scream if I found one in my bathtub!”
Spikes then received a huge number of tweets from people who were angered and disgusted by his joke. Apparently, being Twitter-mobbed has a psychological effect on people who could easily just ignore the tweets. This led the player to try to de-escalate the situation by tweeting this message: “PEOPLE!!!! It’s a joke …seriously a JOKE!!! Chill out.”
Spikes is a third-year linebacker with the New England Patriots. He says that he isn’t homophobic and the team has no comment on his remarks.
“I’m just concentrating on Seattle, so I really don’t have any comment at all about it,” wide receiver Wes Walker said.
Spikes might be just the kind of headache that New England may want to cut. He caused controversy three years ago by appearing in a dirty film, and was also in trouble for using performance-enhancing drugs. This might end up being his third strike with the strict Patriots organization.
