Comedian Wanda Sykes is a black gay woman, and according to her, that puts her in the crosshairs of the Republican Party. The GOP is best known as the party of old white men, so as far as Sykes is concerned, she is persona non grata.
In a special for LOGO, Sykes tackled head on the GOP’s relationship to minorities.
“I’m a black, gay woman,” Sykes said in the special “NewNowNext Vote,” which aired on LOGO network. “I think the only way to make the GOP hate me more is if I sent them a video of me rolling around on a pile of welfare checks.” According to Sykes, she’s what you call a triple threat to the GOP.
Sykes came out of the closet as a lesbian at a rally in Las Vegas regarding proposition 8.
This is not the first time Sykes has stirred controversy while discussing politics. At the 2009 White House Correspondents’ Dinner, Sykes raised eyebrows when she responded to conservative Rush Limbaugh’s comment that he hoped President Obama fails. “I hope he fails” Sykes snapped back in response, “I hope his [Limbaugh's] kidneys fail, how ’bout that? Needs a little waterboarding, that’s what he needs.”
Sykes is probably best known for her stint on The Chris Rock Show during the late 90’s.
