The following interview, which originally aired as part of the documentary “Becoming Barack”, provides insight into Obama’s early years. In his own words, Obama discusses how he registered voters and how he got his start in community organizing.
The interview focuses mostly on Obama’s success in registering new voters during his time at Project Vote. Obama says that he was successful because he was able to show young people that registering to vote was “hip” and “trendy.”
He also said that “when America is sick, black people have pneumonia.” Obviously, he didn’t believe in the mantra “one wave lifting all ships” back then.
