Dr. Boyce: Basketball Wives Boycott Gains Thousands of Followers – Awesome

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, KultureKritic.com
An amazing lady by the name of Alexis M. has engaged in a one-woman campaign to take on the dastardly behemoth otherwise known as “Basketball Wives.”

As a woman on a mission, Alexis has accumulated thousands of signatures for her petition to stop the production of spinoff “Ev and Ocho,” featuring the always-angry Evelyn Lozada and her peculiar fiancé Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson.

When it was reported that the online petition against Evelyn Lozada was gaining steam, all I could say was “yes lawud.”  I love the idea of a real woman standing up to the bully and reclaiming the image of Black women across the globe.

Alexis M. has begun contacting major corporations to ask that they spend their advertising dollars elsewhere.   She is also getting support from those of us who are tired of seeing women of color portrayed as feminine gang bangers, getting in each other’s faces and slapping one another to the ground.   It’s nearly impossible to teach young people to avoid violence when it seems that these 30-somethings always turn to violence as the first resort.

Watch Evelyn’s fight with fellow cast member Royce Reed during Season 3 here:

When I see the image of Evelyn’s snarling face, I can’t help but visualize her as the angry kid in kindergarten, throwing violent temper tantrums when she didn’t get her way.  I then see her as the “Queen Bee” in middle school, as she points out the overweight girl with zits and murders the child’s self-esteem every morning in front of the class.  Finally, I see Evelyn as the prom queen, living under the false assumption that her looks are a “get-out-of-jail-free” card that allows her to hurt other people and get away with it.

READ  Violence Doesn’t Hesitate — And Neither Should You

Well, sorry, Evelyn, the jig is up. You aren’t going to bully us anymore, and there is someone willing to stand up to women like you.

I am proud of Alexis M. for attempting the impossible and finally being the person who holds Evelyn accountable.   Alexis represents all the little girls who become suicidal after relentless bullying by the Evelyn Lozada wannabes being created each night by VH1.   She represents the overweight, depressed 12-year-old who loses friends because the Queen Bee makes others not want to be associated with her.

Evelyn’s activities on this show are not only disgraceful, but they play a direct role in creating hatred in places where we could have just as easily created compassion.  Standing up to the bully in public doesn’t just make us feel better, it serves to protect all the children across the country who are being terrorized by bullies themselves.  It is for these reasons that I say, Run, Alexis, run,” we’re all rooting for you.

I have been wondering why do black people,( black women) in particular watch tv shows like this.Since this tv talk show drama stuff has started. These show’s overall have been the main reason why so much division and arguing goes on among black men and women.Ironic part is that these shows are not controlled or bankrolled by black people.
The overall agenda of these shows is divide and conquer no doubt about it.

Why do people only think it’s black women? Women are fighting on “Basketball Wives” “Mob Wives” “Housewives Atlanta” “Housewives of New Jersey” all of the Housewives series. If you are going to boycott one show why not boycott them all. “Mob Wives” fights are the most violent.

Whether this woman is Puerto Rican Ethiopian or what have you she is a person of color. Those of us that cannot differentiate between the two need only to look at the color of their skin. This will tell the tale melanin content which is the presence of the melanin that is issued into the DNA or make-up of the individual will represent the presence of % of Black origin. When the colonists and before started their forays across the Americas for slaves, Commerce etc..there were many ships containing Moorish sailors and others of color that meshed with women on islands some by force some by choice.. however we are everywhere. We can speak Panamanian,Russian, European and Slavic. We still are PEOPLE OF COLOR ..no matter the languages we speak!!!

When i see that kind of behavior, i do hurt for whatever it is that has hurt Evelyn so bad. She doesn’t act that way because she truly feels good about herself.

I also see no way whatsoever that Shaunie O’Neal can believe what she says in the interviews. If she respected, loved or was even a friend to these women, she would use her power to get them help instead of exploiting their ignorance.

You said a mouth full right there! but she do not want to help them, it is all about makeing a name for herself and the money that she makes from other peoples anger and pain..

When the show first aired I was so interested in seeing a glimpse into a world most of us never get to see. As the show and the series progressed I realized most of the women on it were not actually wives and it appeared the more drama the more air time they received. Let’s remember Evelyn is not the only cast member embarrassing her race. Tami came on and between slapping women and violently cursing them out she is also part of this diatribe we call “reality” tv. In fact all of the cast members took part in the back biting, bullying, etc. that led to me (as well as many other women) to not tune in anymore. One of the other comments mentioned Mob Wives are just as violent. Ok. Is that any excuse? Haven’t we been taught we always have to do better and be stronger? So because some other culture is doing it is ok for us to? Come on. Let’s be real about this. Our great great grandmothers and fathers did not die marching and shouting for equality so we can have equal billing on tv with other cultural ignorance. Shaunie is just one of the producers of this show. Not sure if she even has a voice to change the direction of it but for her own children she should disassociate herself and run for the hills. This show should be cancelled and will be cancelled if we stop watching. It will send a strong message to the networks and advertisers not all people of color appreciate this rachetness. You go Alexis M. Your Mama raised you well!

Well said Nicole. The next show that needs to be off the air is “LOVE AND HIP HOP” The belittling of each other and the disrespect they show towards each other is shameful. I we as a society don’t make efforts to stop these types of shows they will permeate our culture in a worst way, we have to nip it in the bud for the sake of our race….

I have been boycotting Evelyn’s behavior for the longest. I feel her behavior on the show is innate and very genuine in nature surely I for certain that she knows no other way to control herself. I feel sorry for her children and her children to come. I just have to say: Where is Alexis M. so I can sign her petition.

These are the actions of a true hoe! Yes i called Evelyn a hoe based on her shown behavior, attitude, and demeanor! This is how wicked women carry themselves. Being called a hoe should never be rewarding in any light! So, I stand corrected in my use of the word “hoe.”

Thank you God for Alexis M!!! I too will definitely sign your petition!! I started out liking this show but now I am soooo disappointed in how grown women could behave in such demeaning ways! None of these women portrays true friendship or even true acquaintances!! The icing was put on the cake when the way Tami treated Keisha in Tahiti, I would have had her arrested!! I was literally in tears for Keisha! Who do these women really think that they are!! Geez!! And the biggest snake out of them all is Suzie!!!!!!!! I kept watching because I thought they were going to make things right but after the Tahiti episode, I’M DONE WITH THIS MESS!!!!! PLEASE TAKE IT OFF THE AIR!! and put some REAL Basketball wives on with some integrity, self worth and self esteem!!!

I don’t understand who would have considered such a show first of all, and then I can’t imagine any of those females needing money that bad that they would agree to curse, throw drinks, show their bottoms and disgrace black women. They all really should be ashamed there was nothing cute about the show at all

too much energy is given to a fictional reality show, there are much more important battles to fight if we want to influence the next generation away from illusion and ignorance. Or is this a quick way to get some attention to your social network???

Best way to boycott is TURN OFF THE TV. Black television viewership is HUGE. Corporations know, advertisers know it, why don’t we know it?

Every time we turn on our teLIEvision, our viewing patterns are tracked. It’s all about the Benjamin’s baby. We must be really bored to even take the drama in these shows seriously.

First of all, our daughters should not even be allowed to watch this trash. Where is the parental monitoring and censorship? I know we can’t watch everything our children do, but we can “say no” or read with our children instead or engage them in a family activity.

Maybe the fact we’re even discussing this says we need to do more productive things with our down time that will uplift family unity and build esteem in our children.

I suspect a lot of sistahs watch (I was done very early on) because we’re so thirsty to see ANY reflection of ourselves in media since we are practically invisible (as news castors, on t.v. sitcoms, leading ladies in holly wood, music industry etc.). But sistahs, lets not play ourselves. Lets not alone the media to TELL US who we are, lets define ourselves.

Yes there are wretched black females in the world, but I think most of us are doing our best to hold down, family, jobs, and maintain our health and sanity. There are MANY sistahs of color who are doing wonderful things in our communities. But you will NEVER see a show about her. There is a hatred/PURE JEALOUSY for the indigenous black amErican female and all the creativity and strength she has been endowed with, as well as her natural beauty!

I commend the sister for fighting back through her petition. I think that is a proactive step in the right direction.

I would love to see our sistahs go even further by stop buying weave (unless you really need it)
Support natural products (or start making our own) Love who you are the way the Universe made you. Stop supoorting hollywood with our money.

    It Can be downe!
